First week interning in Semco Plastic.

It has been a pretty cool week so far. I had a comprehensive tour of the factory on Tuesday. One of the employees there, Ronnie, taught me all the basic things about the company expense and how they set a price for certain project. On Wednesday, Mr. Conway, the CFO of the company, invited me to watch a meeting that they have every morning which is about the OEE of the factory on the previous day. It was a pretty long and elaborate conference. They talked about all the details of the issues and the potential solutions for them.

Thoughts So Far

It’s been super fun but also, my schedule is way overloaded. I didn’t anticipate needing so much time after each interview to listen to the recording, take more notes, and make decisions about what goes on the blog based on how influential or telling of the subject’s personality or potentially inspiring the material is. Humans are so complex and interesting and it’s difficult trying to pick out just one part of an interview. Also, it’s tough figuring out what questions to ask what people, as everyone’s trains of thought are different and everyone has different preferences on how they want themselves represented and interpreted by the general public.

Next week, I’m probably going to go for a lighter schedule with fewer interviews so I have time to give each person’s statements the careful review I promised.

Days 1, 2, 3

Thus far I’ve been writing for my novel and preparing workouts to improve a client’s upper body strength for upcoming soccer and basketball seasons. Getting a daily routine or schedule together has been the biggest challenge thus far as much of my project is open ended right now.

First Few Days

Since Monday, I’ve been working with an IT company based in Louisville. So far, most of my work has been on the beginning stages of developing a website for a non-profit. To determine how best to create the site, I’ve been discussing with my contact person what the needs of the organization are and spent time taking notes on the way similar organizations’ websites and social media pages work. I’m currently still in the middle of comparing and getting comfortable with different website designing platforms.

Gambrill Gardens Day One

Today I met with the Activities Director (Cathy) and spent the whole day with her. We did two exercise classes and one craft session with the residents. When Cathy is not directing a scheduled activity, she walks around through the different buildings (A-F) and interacts with the residents through puzzles, games, or conversation.

So, I followed her today and met many of the residents.  They’re all very nice so far, and many of them like to crack jokes about my age which is something I haven’t experienced.

Part of her job is keeping up relationships with the residents.  Not only to build community but to keep as many of them as possible satisfied with the activities and the schedule.

I enjoyed working with her for a day and I’m excited to spend most of my time in the next five weeks with her as well!

Day One

Just posted the first interview on my WordPress account (link in profile). I have two more interviews scheduled for this afternoon.

Sitting down for the first one was a little nerve-wracking but it went really well; not only did I get substantial content for my project, I also got to have a great conversation with a friend.
