Gambrill Gardens Day One

Today I met with the Activities Director (Cathy) and spent the whole day with her. We did two exercise classes and one craft session with the residents. When Cathy is not directing a scheduled activity, she walks around through the different buildings (A-F) and interacts with the residents through puzzles, games, or conversation.

So, I followed her today and met many of the residents.  They’re all very nice so far, and many of them like to crack jokes about my age which is something I haven’t experienced.

Part of her job is keeping up relationships with the residents.  Not only to build community but to keep as many of them as possible satisfied with the activities and the schedule.

I enjoyed working with her for a day and I’m excited to spend most of my time in the next five weeks with her as well!

    1. It’s actually slow, which will take some adjusting. People only move quickly when the ambulance comes (it came twice today.) Other than that it’s very relaxed.

    1. Today I got to help four ladies decorate canvas bags with quilting materials while Cathy was in a meeting! I also shadowed at reception for the second half of the day, and I answered not one but TWO phone calls. Big strides. But to answer your question more specifically, I’m hoping to gain more responsibility as time goes by and I do know for sure that I’ll shadow the marketing department at some point.

  1. Do you expect your experience at Gambrill Gardens to influence your intended career path? I know it’s a bit early to tell, but I’m curious to see what you think at the beginning vs. the end!

    1. Honestly, I’m not sure! After two days I already love how much interaction I have with the residents, so I can say that I think my time at Gambrill will solidify my wish to work in an environment with lots of face time.

  2. What would you say is the span of the age of the residents? Are there some youngster upper 60’s in there? What kind of range are we looking at?

    1. Well, I don’t know the youngest resident… but I met a little 100-year-old lady today so I’m guessing she’s the oldest. My bets are on the range starting in the upper sixties. Will update if I learn more, obviously.
