New Idea

For the second half of my project, I decided to do a photo essay on St. Louis. It’ll just be a series of photographs showing the story of the city, with little blurbs of written history to accompany them. I’m also going to experiment a lot with street photography and general portraiture, so if any of you guys want to join and/or want your picture taken, hit me up.

So far this week I’ve had a huge amount of interviews, many of which aren’t on the blog but will be tomorrow. I’ve also gotten in contact with a photographer who will hopefully be able to give me some pointers.

First day at Semco

My first week of three at Semco I am going to be spending with chief engineer Dave Fisher.  Today I learned how to use their Digital Measuring Machine to measure speaker parts and make sure they were acceptable measurements.  I also worked with their version of CAD and talked with the engineers in the machine shop about their current projects and what they do on a day to day basis.

Week 3

I really love working on the website; it’s something that actually benefits an organization and helps form some solid skills for the future. It’s been great working with Mr. Eckel.

This week I get to start on the actual design process and registering/updating the domain. After all of that is done, I’ll move on to updating pages on different social media platforms.

Gambrill Gardens: More Marketing

This week at Gambrill I am back with the marketing department, which I did not anticipate but I am happy to be there again because I love all of the organizing tasks.

This morning I took my first ukulele lesson with one of the new residents.  His name is Charlie and he’s very patient with me.

Today I proposed the idea of putting all of the key check-out slips (there are over 330) into an Excel spreadsheet and they loved that idea, so that’s what I’ll be working on tomorrow!

Thank you, Dr. Urbano… if you’re reading this.  I wouldn’t’ve been able to propose this wonderful idea without you forcing me to use Excel instead of Google Sheets a year ago!

almost-midnight thoughts

The more practice I get with interviewing people, the more substantial the results are, and I’m having troubles paring the interviews down to a reasonable length because everything the subjects have had to say so far is just so interesting to listen to and read. That’s okay though–this is a fun kind of struggle.

Something I love about all this is the renewed connections with people because they’re willing to be so vulnerable. It makes for a more fruitful project but it also makes for some genuine conversation and human connection.

First day interning with Dr. Urbano and Mrs. Fu

I started my internship with Dr. Urbano and Mrs. Fu today at school.

In the morning, I helped Dr. Urbano to teach some students in his math class. Then, I was assigned a Math curriculum project to do. Mrs. Fu showed me a computer program that can generate Math practice problems. Later on, I tried to utilize this program to create different sets of Calculus problems from easy to hard level for the next generation of TFS. This is probably what my main focus for this week.

Verve Day 1

Today, I started my first day shadowing Zoe’s uncle, Kurt Krueger. He’s a commercial architect that I think will be a good comparison to Rhonda. He is the president and licensed architect of the firm Verve. His firm is made up of ten architects-all bringing different aspects to the table. Some are interior designers and some help with the business side.

We mostly stayed in his office all day while he talked to the other architects in the firm, and while he talked to clients. He showed me the designs for the new Wehrenberg movie theaters, which I thought was interesting. He also looked over one of the designers floor plans for a coffee shop and showed me the mistakes.

LAST Week at Semco

During the last week, there are two main topics that I was trying to understand, expense and revenue. By doing all those excel projects, I gradually learned how the company set the standard cost for each material and how the standard cost differ from the actual cost. Moreover, I have learned all the formulas that they use to get data such as overhead cost.

Micheal took me for a factory tour at the end of the week. He showed me all the new machines and the working routine of the factory laborers.

Overall, these weeks have been just amazing.
