Formlabs Day 1

Today I started my internship at Formlabs in Boston.  Formlabs is a small company that designs and manufactures 3D printers that use Stereolithography (STL).  STL is a form of 3D printing (unlike what we have at school) that uses a laser to cure a vat of resin and form it into the desired shape.  The printers are capable of printing rubber, plastic, nylon, and many other materials at a very high level of detail.

The office feel at Formlabs is very relaxed which is very different from last week at MTD, a much larger company with more rules and a traditional business feel.  Here they dress casually, bring dogs to work, and even have a ping pong table and couches in almost every office.

Today I worked on quality control for the vats that hold the resin.  It was a long work day (9-6:30) but with free snacks at any time, music, and couches the need to go home was rather minimized.  Tomorrow I will be able to design and print my own creations as well as helping some other guys around the office with some jobs they need help with.

This Coming Week

Sunday I drove to Louisville (with Loki, who was a perfect angel for four hours) to work with the IT company in person for two weeks. I’ve spent my time so far getting everything together on paper for the website and researching different platforms for how versatile and affordable they are for my purposes.

Week 2 Plan

Everything still hurts from the teeth removal so today I’m focusing on starting a written reflection about people in general and the way they relate to each other based on what I know from experience & what I’ve seen in interviews.

For the rest of the week, I plan to work on that, get some feedback from outside sources, and conduct a few interviews. (Next week will be busier, like last week was.)

Day 5

Today we went to Union to meet with a client who’s kids used to go to Fulton, Mrs. Dayna Williams. She wanted her bathroom remodeled so I helped Rhonda measure her bathroom and draw a rough plan. Then we went to a house that Rhonda was considering buying and flipping.

Gambrill Gardens: Bingo and Book Sorting

I did not post on Wednesday, so I will do a bit of a longer post today to explain the past three days.

Every day this week consisted of some of the same things.  For example, there are always two exercise classes every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.  There is always quilting on Wednesdays.  Craft time is Monday afternoon.

Between the schedule, I follow Cathy around and make conversation with the residents.

On Thursday we (Cathy and I) spent five and a half hours organizing about 240 books for the residents into categories: fiction, non-fiction, instructional guides, and religious texts.  Then we sorted each category alphabetically by last name and put them on shelves in a common room.

Today was my favorite because we played bingo and I got to call the numbers!

Overall, the week was exciting and I enjoy spending time with the residents!  I am learning their names and some of them know mine, so it’s nice to see them around throughout the day.

Elliott, to fully answer your question about the age range at Gambrill, the oldest person there is 104!  And, the youngest is around sixty-four (Cathy’s guess.)  You must be at least sixty-two to live there.

day 4

Current schedule: doing around six to eight hours of renovation work for grandparents in the day, not part of project plan. To work around this I’ve been testing varying interval workouts for a personal training client once I get home (around 7:00 or 8:00 PM) and have been planning the basketball lessons for lower school next week and working on novel in the night.

Current progress: nearly done with a fresh chapter for novel, currently at an eighty-three page total. Have sent plans to Coach Sharma for doing a gym unit on basketball for lower school next week. Have made and sent several workouts to client, will be playing basketball with him this weekend to assess current skill level.
