It’s good to work at home

Today I didn’t go to the dealer store instead of that I worked at Billy’s house in the garage. My work today is basically the translation of the 2017 Land Rover:New discovery informations from English to Chinese. That’s more convenient for us to organize the similarities and differences between different type of SUV. Also translated those key words to Chinese is helpful for our Chinese customers. I don’t know all of those words but I used the electronic translator to finish my job. It is not only a good chance for me to learn about cars, how and why are they different. But also it helps me to learn some new words to improve my English. It is truly hot to work in the garage without the AC but I had a really nice day. Dc.Hurwitz and Mrs.Douglass called me today and we have a FaceTime call. I really appreciate everything you’ve done for me and the understanding you gave me. And I really hope all of you have a nice experience in your senior project. Wish you all have a good day and I’m going to enjoy the AC in my room.

5/2 Tuesday

Nico sent me two more resumes to format. Each one took me about 20-30 minutes as I wanted them to be perfect. After they’re done I sent them back to Nico and she’ll go over them before senting to bosses. I kinda enjoy doing this because I like organizing anyway. Also I got to read other people’s educational and professional experience. Sometimes they’re quiet impressive and interesting. They gives me an idea of what people’s path look like in relation to my own. I started to think about what my resume would look like in 5 years or 10.

Whoops…. Forgot to Get on Here…..

Well then…. looks like I seem to be a tad forgetful and need email reminders to post….. huh. Ah well.

Since I last posted I can say that a lot has happened! I have successfully taught 2 different classes by myself! They included a pond class, A candle making and wagon packing class. I have also lead groups around for GPS classes.

Now, onto the first one. The pond class was relatively straightforward. The class walked down to the pond (which is really a lake, but it has the same invertebrates) and I then gave a small explanation about why it is a lake and not a pond, then we talked about adaptations of the flora and fauna in the aquatic environment. After I finished talking, that’s when the fun began! The children were let loose with nets and buckets to catch critters! I also grabbed a net and bucket, after all, the teacher needed to interact with the kids and have fun too! I also needed to make sure that we caught some important critters. After we finished catching stuff, we brought it all back to the big bucket and combined it together. Students were then asked to identify some of the critters with guide books we provided. After all that was done, we moved to wrap up the lesson and walked back to the assembly building.

The candle making class was less active, but still entertaining. first, earlier that morning, we had set up cans of wax around a fire to melt down. this took a couple hours. Then when the students arrived, we gave them a small piece of cotton string and talked about what people in the 1800s who were planning to move west of the Mississippi had to prepare for and what they did when they got there. after we had finished that, the students got up and formed a line behind a can of wax. The line was to give each student a chance for the wax to cool on their string. If they dipped for too long in the wax, they would just melt off the wax that they already had on it. While they were doing this, we talked about what candles are made of and what the frontiersmen used for wax. (beeswax and animal fat). when they finished making their candles, we sat the kids back down, and talked about the journey itself. This was something that took very little time, as the next activity was simply putting checks on a page. Wagon packing was just making a list of stuff we provided with the weight of each item, as there was a 400 pound limit on what they could bring.

there were other classes that we taught but I will summarizes those throughout this week as I will be mostly cleaning the office and doing chores around the DBOC. This is because the groups that are supposed to come out have all cancelled because of the flooding.

An ending & a beginning

Working the Hill was the coolest thing I’ve ever done, and will ever do. I’m seventeen and I’ve peaked. A sad reality.

Man, in the last couple of months I forgot that I liked to learn. I wasn’t interested in reading–I stopped practicing piano. But this leg of the project really reignited that fire for me. I think I’ll be able to get more out of the next three weeks because of it.

An important thing I learned about myself (that I kind of already knew but this really made it apparent): injustice motivates me like absolutely nothing else. Oh boy. And I felt like lots of it was going on, but subtly. As I’m sure you’ve gleaned from my blogging thus far, I think that lots of news outlets are not reporting the truth about what is happening at the House of Representatives. Bernie Sanders posted this last Wednesday:

But an amendment to the healthcare bill that took out special treatment of congressmen had been put in on Tuesday night, almost 24 hours before this post. I’m honestly not trying to get political here and this is not pointed specifically at Bernie Sanders–this was just the most pertinent example to what our office was working on at the time.

It’s happening from both sides of the aisle and also about non-governmental issues. A very major thing I took away from this is that people, newspapers, and bloggers all blatantly lie. It’s truly shameless. The government was never going to shut down–a budget proposal to extend the deadline had been in the works for weeks. But major outlets are not going to report that because they literally profit off of the panic of the public. The longer you scroll, the more ads you see, the more money they make. It’s a joke.

Also, a moment of truth: if you call your Congresman and rant about how awful the new healthcare bill is for fifteen minutes and rudely accuse all the interns of trying to kill your grandmother–it’s still just going to be put into a spreadsheet as “vote no for HR1628.” That’s all. So save yourself some time and breath and simply say, “Please vote no on HR1628.” There’s no need to be nasty, no matter how strongly you feel about an issue. Tone won’t change the result.

An increased disillusionment with the media is probably my biggest takeaway. Seeing the discrepancy between what is actually happening at the Capitol and what’s being reported is just staggering.

On a lighter note, I flew into New York today and I’m going to start working with a textile company tomorrow. I’m pretry excited about it, but like I said, I think I’ve peaked. There’s no way it’ll be as cool as the House was.

5/1 Monday

My roommate and I went to Central Park over the weekend but I’m not going to talk about that.
I talked to Nico today about my intern hours. Because working everyday from 9 to 6 is very tiring to be honest despite most/all of the time was spent sitting. Also because I just realized for the project I only need to work 6 hours per day. I always stayed till 6 because I found it awkward to leave early, but Nico and everyone including bosses told me to go home whenever. Might as well do so. So from now on I’m going to go from 11 to around 530.
Besides that Nico gave me a resume to format. It’s one of their candidates’ resumes and they come in all kind of formats. They don’t look quiet as organized and if we’re providing them to the clients, they’d look messy and unprofessional. They have a global sage candidate resume template and my job is turn the resumes into our formate.

Marshall’s Senior Project – Week 4/5

I want to start this blog post by expressing how much I love what I’m doing and most importantly the connections I’m making. I just met a guy who works in New York and essentially does the the same the thing as the partnership except they actually take equity. It’s crazy because I was  just talking with a teacher about how moving to New York might affect the connections that I’m making. Every one I work with during my time at the partnership has made it very clear that they are willing to help me in and provide opportunities which is awesome. I will say I’ve gotten past the stage of where getting new assignments is exciting not to say I’m getting bored. As I was explaining my progress on putting together “why St. Louis” information(I mentioned before this info on all the resources STL has in preparation for Amsterdam) to Ginger we both kind of realized that something like that can be used by the entire St. Louis Start-up community along with an entrepreneurs road map similar to https://www.itenstl.org/wpcontent/uploads/2017/03/ITEN_2016_Pathway.pdf except more comprehensive, offer industry specific resources and provide information for companies at different stages of development. I’ve also been continuing my work with anchor tenants and that’s almost finished. This week I’ve actually not been at the partnership as the I&E team is in San Francisco at a conference. I’m spending the next to day at Arch Grants, one of the largest SBDC(Small Business Development Corporation) in St. Louis. Here I have been working on updating their client database as well as their donor database. TL;DR: It’s been real.

First day of this week

I just start work today. I didn’t go to work this morning because I went to the police office to get back my wallet. I lost it accidentally last Saturday and someone find it gave to the police. This is our Dealer license plate. Only the dealer company can have this plate. On the right side of this plate DLR means dealer. On the back of this plate is the dealer license.

1st day library volunteer

I always thought working in the library should be a really relax job. But it is the opposite of that. But I enjoyed to be the helper behind it. I learned to be more appreciate with librarians.

I mainly helped to set their present for the summer reading club. It is sweet of the library to give each person who come everyday a gift in the middle and the end. Also different age get different things.

Their are lots of things you didn’t see behind the gift sets. people have to put them one by one all by hand. Each of the thing they handed out have their love in it.

I used around 200 paper clips which mean I picked around 200 gifts.

I helped to cross a schedule from each of the schedule handouts. Also taped another schedule on it.
